For Asher Flyn Ferris
The cylindrical wicker stand
Supports a metal plate
On which is perched a candle
In earthen coloured shades.
Look closer
At the bamboo weave of Stars of David.
The thing is clearer now.
Candle of light in perspective
Needing to be lit
Cusp of hand to protect the first
Burst of flame.
The candle stands free,
Like a child,
Standing with tradition.
We all need to be lit.
We learn to stand for something.
Beginning, learning from the past,
We light our way and pierce a community.
