(1985) A Note on Labor Leader, 1977-1985

A Note on Labor Leader.

First circulated at the NSW ALP Council Meeting1 held at the NSW Teachers’ Federation auditorium in September 1977 Labor Leader was unmistakably a NSW ALP right wing factional newspaper, with various attacks on the Left and statements and articles articulating a social democratic approach.  The founder editor and inspiration of the first few issues was then Labor Council of NSW’s Education and Publicity Officer, Bob Carr.

He wanted the NSW ALP right to take on the left in the field of ideas and use his considerable wit to mock the pretensions of some of their leaders and activists.  A heavy dose of anti-Soviet rhetoric influenced the paper. This reflected Carr’s and his successor as editor, Michael Easson’s, interests and fascination with the lessons of Soviet experiment.  Henry Mayer described the early issues as:

A mixture of history, overseas material, and policy with a bit of local anti-left standard gossip and split predictions. Somewhat insipid, perhaps, but the point of view it embraces is not easy to present.  Only paper in the 70s where you can find a pro-Bernstein paper by Sidney Hook.  May improve.  Mildly interesting now.3

A review in the first issue of Labor Leader of Rodney Cavalier’s university thesis on the NSW ALP was controversial.  I had qualms afterwards about my involvement. I wrote extracts and Carr jazzed that up into an article under the by-line “Our Sydney University Correspondent”. I think all university theses should be publicly available. (Stephen Loosley’s on the NSW ALP socialisation units in the 1930s written in 1975 at the University of NSW was another I wanted to read, but it seemed to “disappear” quickly from what used to be a full collection in the office of the Department of Political Science at the University of NSW of those theses awarded a First.)  Carr persuaded that Cavalier’s thesis was fair meat to throw on the factional bar b que. My fault for not thinking this through.  Later, access restrictions were introduced at the University of Sydney. I am sorry I helped cause that.

Bob Carr’s cartoon in the first, October 1977 issue of Labor Leader accompanied the article on Rodney Cavalier’s university thesis on the Left.
